Historical development of the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) serves as the guardian of international humanitarian law, a complex role closely linked to the founding of the committee itself and later formally entrusted to it by the international community. This article presents the various aspects of the historical development of the ICRC's work. We address the origins and historical development of the ICRC, review in detail its activities during the First and Second World Wars, and review its most important achievements and successful interventions in sparing humanity the barbarity of war.
