لا تعدو دراسة المعنى عند البلاغيين والأصوليين أن تكون دراسة للمعنى الضمنيّ إذ لم يكن المعنى الصريح إلا مدخلا من مداخل دراسة ما وراء المعنى من مراتب تتفاوت حسب مناهج البحث وموضوعاته وغاية كلّ علم من العلوم وخلفيات أصحابه المدرسيّة والمذهبيّة. فكل الدراسات التي اهتمت بالخطاب من حيث البنية والدلالة بحثت فصوص المعنى، ولم تكتف بظاهر القول، ولم تقف عند المعاني الأول، وإنّما كان قصدها إلى ما رواءه من معان.

The study of meaning, according to rhetoricians and legal theorists, is nothing more than a study of implicit meaning, as explicit meaning is merely one entry point into the study of meta-meaning, with levels that vary according to research methods and topics, the aims of each discipline, and the scholastic and sectarian backgrounds of its proponents. All studies that have focused on discourse in terms of structure and meaning have examined the nuances of meaning, not contenting themselves with the apparent meaning of a statement or stopping at primary meanings, but rather aiming at the meanings that lie beyond it.
